<p>There are several things a small business owner needs to do for a successful Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) mailing. First thing needed is a good offer to the customers. Too many small business owners make a good offer for their business, but it will not generate a good response from the households that received the mailer. </p>
<p>The quality of the card stock makes a major difference to the success rate. Some will send a cheap flyer, while a full color high quality stock  9 x 12 postcard will get the best results. The reason to select the  9 x 12, because it is the largest size that can be mailed without being folded. You should target areas near your small business and those a little further out to expose your business to people who do not know you exist. This way you will be reaching customers your current marketing is not hitting. Higher income households and homes will bring a higher<br />

<p>Some claim that direct mail does not work. It works great with the right offer to the right audience. For example, I had a client once tell me that direct mail does not work. I told him that we could send an offer a free $20 gift certificate for each person. He told me no, because too many people would come in to redeem the offer. So, people do see your offers. People see your direct mail offer, but if it a weak offer, the response will be weak also.</p>
<p>I managed many promotional and liquidation sales that the majority of the customers for opening day were from a 4 x 6 postcard.  Stores that would do $1,00-$1,500 daily would do $20,000-$30,000 the first day with most items discounted 13%. </p>
<p>I did several promotional sales that the small business owners had run previous sales with our company. They saw what we did and we left all the material, but they could not get near the same results. It is like a recipe just one small change can make a big difference in results.</p>
<p>The saturation mailing needs to be send to a large enough audience to get worthwhile results. While Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) will allow a mailing as small as 200 pieces, a small business owner should do a mailing of at least 2,000 pieces.</p>

<p>- Business&#8217;s that have very slow seasonal slumps</p>
<p>- New small businesses that need to grow quickly.</p>
<p>While this method can work, the method below is what I suggest for many small business owners in San Antonio.</p>
<p><strong>Here is a method that will be more profitable in the long-term for most small businesses in San Antonio than marketing with Groupon.</strong> With the advance of the internet, many small business owners forget the traditional ways still work if used properly. Direct mail has made many a small business owner plenty of money and that is still true today.</p>
<p>With the cost of postage rising and email free, there is less competition with direct mail. If you have a good sales letter or captivating postcard, it will get read.</p>
<p>Of course, the key is to get opened first, so postcards will have a higher exposure rate. The bigger the postcard, the more likely the message will be noticed. Most postcards are 4 x 6 or 5 x7. The larger post cards will get more attention, but until recently the cost of postage kept many business owners from using them.</p>

The USPS has stepped up advertising <strong>Every Door Direct Mail</strong> in a variety of ways including television advertising. <strong>EDDM</strong> was created as a means for the USPS to encourage small businesses to use postage mail.  It has the additional beneficial effect of allowing business owners to target local audiences by using specific carrier route information for a saturation mailing. </p>
<p>Now small businesses will be able to target specific localized audiences for a fraction of what it used to cost to do standard mailings.  Most small business owners know where their target market resides, and <strong>EDDM </strong>allows them to target their market and blanket them with advertising.</p>
<p>Many small business owners in San Antonio give up on advertising altogether due to the high cost to bring in more customers. Certain types of advertising are ineffective, and others are too costly.  </p>
